About the Sitemap Validator

Fetches a sitemap (gzipped too) and checks it against the sitemaps.org protocol: the root element and namespace, the URL count, that every loc is an absolute URL on the same site and that lastmod dates are in W3C format. A sitemap index is followed to its first child sitemaps.

How many URLs can one sitemap hold?

50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. Beyond that, split it and reference the parts from a sitemap index.

Does lastmod matter?

Yes, when it is accurate. Crawlers use it to prioritise re-crawling, but they learn to ignore it if every URL claims to have changed today.
